OOC Mechanics of Magic

Magic has been split into two classes. Major and minor. This helps us firstly gain an idea of how powerful a character will be and secondly allows us to implement a system of ranks which magic users progress up and unlock more schools. Most magic users will be novices until making contact with a teacher or tome. The teacher will teach them all that is neccessary to be considered the rank above your current whereupon an admin will add a note to your character sheet saying that you can infact access the amount of schools your class can access.

Magic is built upon the words of power. The creator spoke a long chain of words in a long forgotten language which firstly created the world and all around it as well as the higher plains which people draw arcane energy from. To cast a magical spell the user must envoke or directly speak a word they know. This can be done in two ways. Directly saying it as you cast or performing a specific movement. Rituals are long periods of planned medatations and movements which over days build into longer and more permanent spells. Every mage meditates to learn more of these words. Divination is common to almost all mages as they must sit and search themselves for the words of power to further increase their skill. A character might spend 50 years attempting to gain a word and gain nothing. It all depends on the person.

Levels of magic skill from from highest to lowest.
Archmage
Warlock
Wizard
Apprentice
Novice

Consult the table below to see how many magic schools your character can choose. Ensure the school you have chosen is clear on your character sheet or has been made known to an admin.

Methods for learning magic
Prestidigitations- Muted spells that can only affect things in a small radius using muted effects such as heating or freezing. These spells cannot affect living matter.

Talismans- Most mages learn their prestidigitations via an object which holds significance to them. Each user had to learn to cast somehow on some non living entity so therefor most pick an item with sentimental value. A ring or chain perhaps.

Tomes- Incredibly rare books which resonate with persons with magical abilities. They provide the building blocks upon which a strong magical knowledge is built.
